Chapter Ten

I TOOK a shower. I tried to take a nap. I decided it was as good a chance to practice meditation as any. Nothing worked. I was angry, frustrated, and, more than anything else, afraid. Staying busy had always been a good way for me to keep from obsessing over things. If I kept my brain occupied with some activity or another, I didn’t have to think about family pressure, my future, or all the failures of my past. Now, more than ever, I needed the distraction. My family was in danger. Weirdo thugs were spying on my friends. I was being quarantined in some cabin in the woods for my own protection, treated like a dumb adolescent who knew just enough to be dangerous and not enough to stay out of trouble.

I stared up at the wooden beams of the bedroom ceiling, one leg swinging over the edge of the bed. The constant back-and-forth motion rocked the mattress in a way I usually found soothing, but my agitation only made the movements more and more aggressive until the mattress springs squeaked and the headboard bumped against the wall. Now it sounded like I was having energetic sex. Awesome.

I so didn’t need to think about sex right now. Twice things had gone further than they should have with William, and both times I ended up feeling like crap afterward. Of course, before the crap, things had felt pretty damn amazing.

I jumped from the bed. It had only been thirty minutes, and I was already bouncing off the walls.

The No Service message on my phone mocked me. I needed to talk to someone. Preferably someone who knew and understood me. Someone I could confess my idiotic behavior of the night before to. I needed to have someone check up on my family. Damn it, I needed Ford. But no, my phone was taking a hiatus from the whole phone thing.

I’d thought to avoid William a while longer as I tried to come to terms with my situation. Guess that was a lost cause.

I tracked the scent of William to an office at the back of the cabin. Large windows faced a stunning forest view I almost missed because I was distracted by the sight of four large-screen monitors, enough sleek electronics to support NASA, and William growling into his phone in what sounded like French. Of course William spoke French. Probably all secret spy types spoke French. Unfortunately, because I didn’t speak the language, I had no idea what he was saying, but the menacing tone sent chills down my back. If he ever spoke to me in that tone of voice, I’d probably wet myself.

I didn’t think I’d made any noise, but the minute I hit the threshold of the room, he reached over and turned off two of the monitors.

I stared at the blank screens, jaw clenched. It didn’t take me more than a second to understand. William didn’t think I could be trusted. Or he thought I was a child.
